Be a Kid Again With Tinkertoys at Discovery Gateway {Plus a Giveaway}

You have arrived.  The Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum giveaway is at the bottom of this post.

Let’s take a journey.  Back to our youth.  The days when you rode your bike all over town.  Stayed outside all day in the summer and only came home for dinner.  When toys were simple and just plain old fun.  The days of the Tinkertoy.  You are getting all misty eyed and nostalgic aren’t you?  It’s okay… I will give you a second to grab a tissue before I talk about the awesome GIANT Tinkertoy: Build Your Imagination Exhibit at Discovery Gateway in Utah.

Tinkertoy Exhibit

Now that you have had a chance to recover from that amazing trip down memory lane… Lets explore the fabulous world of Tinkertoys at Discovery Gateway.  You don’t have to be a kid to let your imagination be carried away by this amazing traveling exhibit.  Thanks to some fabulous sponsors, like GE and Energy Solutions, Utah is lucky to have access to tinker around until January 6th, 2013.

Discovery Gateway Children's Musuem

Some of the hands on features you and the children in your life can enjoy in the Tinkertoy: Build Your Imagination exhibit are:

  • Invent – Children are encouraged to think about where ideas come from, and to explore the emerging field of biomimicry – nature’s influence on design. Visitors can match real inventions with their natural inspiration and create a design of their own.
  • Collaborate – Dual-sided panels allow visitors to work independently or with a partner to create TINKERTOY designs.
  • The Tinker Tank – A walk-in size replica of a TINKERTOY canister is the starting point for the exhibit’s challenging scavenger hunt, a must for those with an eye for detail and a nose for knowledge! The Tinker Tank contains a variety of educational materials that attest to the impact of unconventional ideas on some of the world’s greatest – and strangest – inventions, and serve as a reminder that “If at first you don’t succeed…”
  • You can read about all the amazing hands on learning here.

Don’t worry about cost.  This exhibit is included with your regular admission or annual pass.  In fact that isn’t the only activity that is included in your admission cost:

  • Time for Tots- A parent and child literacy program for children 18 months-3 years.  Tuesdays at 11 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm
  • Science Saturdays- Every Saturday, families will explore evidence, conduct experiments, and draw conclusions with different scientific themes. Saturdays at 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm
  • Studio 444- Led by DG’s Arts Educator, little ones, older children, and parents create masterpieces of art together using a wide variety of media. Sign up for this class at the Info Desk. Fridays at 4 pm and Saturdays at 11 am, 1 pm & 3pm (They were making the coolest sugar skulls when I was there.  I wish I could have stayed longer
  • Read about some of the other amazing programs offered with your admission here.

Story at Home 2013 Ticket Giveaway

It seems like it was just a few months ago I was giving away a ticket to the 2012 Story @ Home Conference.  My only regret… I wasn’t able to attend because I was out of town.  This year I am not going to make that mistake, and neither should you. Mark your calendars for February 1-2, 2013 and join me at Story @ Home. It is being held in gorgeous downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.  And because I like to do awesome things for you… How about I do a Story at Home 2013 Ticket Giveaway?

story at home 2013 ticket giveaway

This year I will not only be attending the conference but I will also be teaching a beginning social media workshop with the extra amazing women Emily and Tauni.  It will be everything you ever wanted to know about social media that we can squeeze into one workshop.  And if I do say so myself I am a giant social media junkie.  I’ve been known to tweet over 50,000 times… I don’t see that as a problem.  I see that as experience, right?

You may be asking, “What does social media have to do with storytelling?”  And, truly, that is a good question.  No, you aren’t going to be able to share pages and pages of information about your family vacation on Twitter or Facebook.  But you can connect to your friends and family and share small snippets of your life.  Mini-stories you may call them.  Funny things your kids said, you new favorite book, or just a photo of a beautiful sunset.  All these things are micro stories about your life.  Because it’s your story… You should tell it in every way you can.

Don’t worry.  This conference isn’t all about social media.  There are fabulous speakers and workshops galore.  And let’s not forget about the amazing storytellers that will be taking the stage.   But would you expect anything different from sponsors like Cherish Bound and FamilySearch.org?  It’s your story… Get ready to tell it and register now with tickets at only $79 there is really no reason not to.

Be sure to follow along online:

Story at Home 2013 Ticket Giveaway

  • 1 full conference pass ($79 value)
  • Contest will end on 11/7/12 at Midnight MST

A Dinoriffic Giveaway

My love for the Natural History Museum of Utah runs deep.  I loved it way back in the day when it was still the Utah Museum of Natural History.  My kids have enjoyed many of their activities and summer camps and dinoriffic fun for years.  We even have a season pass… Because it is that much fun.  That is why I am so excited to share this Natural History Museum of Utah giveaway with you today.

Natural History Museum of Utah giveawayRecently I was invited to take some of my favorite little people on a tour of the Natural History Museum of Utah.  My adorable nieces and nephew had never been to to new location and I was so excited to share with them all the wonder the museum has to offer.  It is always so much fun to see the world through new fresh eyes.

All the kids on the tour were so attentive as they listened to the instruction of our tour guide.  I think they knew that something spectacular awaited them just beyond the person taking tickets.  And you know what?  They were right.

I’m not going to lie.  When I go to the Natural History Museum of Utah I am all about the dinosaurs.  Their displays are truly breathtaking.  And I just really think dinosaurs are pretty cool.

dinosaur

The tour did have it’s fair share of dino fun but, I was amazed to see all the non-dinosaur related activities the museum had for the kids to enjoy.

  • Bug Brigade- Every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 2-4pm you can have some hands on fun with some of the creepiest crawlies around.  If you have a little bug lover this one is for you.
  • Family Sleepovers- It takes the stress out of camping.  And the dirt.  On November 9th, 2012 you and your children (ages 5-13) can come to the most historic sleepover of all time.  Registration is open now.
  • Birthday Parties- Do you love celebrating your kids birthday but dislike all the hassle and cleanup?  Let the Natural History Museum of Utah throw a party to go down in the history books.

And at the end of the day sometimes it’s just fun to be a kid, get down on the floor, and examine the dinosaur bones underneath the plexi-glass.  I think we could all use a little of that in our lives so why not take a little visit:

Sometimes I Like Shrimp Tacos: Costa Vida Giveaway

I love to share all my dirty little secrets with you… Up until recently I have never had a shrimp taco.  I KNOW… Horrifying.  I will give you a second to recover from my shocking truth.  Are you okay now?  Good, we can move on.  Who can you thank for introducing me the the magical world that is shellfish in a tortilla?  Costa Vida of course.

The day the of the shrimp certainly wasn’t my first Costa Vida rodeo but, it was my most memorable.  I have enjoyed the bliss that is Costa Vida’s pork salad on many occasions and questioned if I could really like anything as much.  And, I have to give props to Chef Dave… The Sweet Baja Shrimp Taco is a close 2nd to my beloved sweet pork salad.  The shrimp is tender and flavorful but not fishy.  The tortilla is is soft, chewy, and well… perfect.  Add a little mango salsa and hot sauce for a supberb taco experience.

You probably already love Costa Vida for their gluten free options.  Maybe their freshly made salads (like me). The giant burritos. Or possibly their amazing salsa selection, that is perfect on chips?

Now I am giving you a chance to fall in love with Costa Vida all over again with an awesome giveaway.  Maybe you can get wild like I did and get your shrimp on!

Giveaway Time!!!

Costa Vida is offering one lucky reader the chance to win $25 in gift cards to… Well Costa Vida of course.  :-)

Entering is super duper easy.  Just fill out the form below:

All “Hale” 2013 (Plus a Giveaway)

(giveaway at bottom of post)

It is no secret that I love live theater.  There is something so exhilerating about watching a scene unfold right before your eyes, literally.  That is why I am so glad we have Hale Centre Theatre right here in Utah.  I am even MORE glad (or gladder even) since I just saw their 2013 lineup.   Plus, I just can’t get enough of the theater-in-the-round seating.  There isn’t a bad seat in the house.  Which makes me MOST glad (or gladdest possibly)

I am sad to admit that I haven’t been to a show at Hale Centre Theatre yet this year.  But I plan on rectifying that oversight very shortly because The Sound of Music AND 9 to 5 The Musical are both playing this summer.   And since I frequently sing “My Favorite Things” out of tune how can I resist???? Plus, I kind of worship Dolly Parton so how can I NOT see 9 to 5?

The 2013 Season Lineup at Hale Centre Theatre has been announced and I am going to give you a sneak peek at what HCT has in store for you next year:

  •  The 39 Steps — Dec. 31, 2012 – Feb. 2, 2013

Launching the 2013 season is the romantic comedy and winner of two Tony Awards, “The 39 Steps.” Adapted from the Alfred Hitchcock classic, this romantic mystery comedy begins when Richard Hannay finds a strange woman dead in his house. Four dizzying actors play multiple roles that take them through the country and the city and from the train to a Scottish Inn. Emotions rise and fall as this production brings loathing and romance.

  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang — Premiere Feb. 15 – April 13, 2013

A regional company premiere, this classic musical begins when a racing car’s career comes to an end with a damaging crash during a Grand Prix race. The car ends up in an old garage where it is to be sold and melted down to liquid ore. Two young children intercede and beg their father to purchase the car, and the magical adventures begin.

  • No Time for Sergeants — April 23 – May 25, 2013

Back by popular demand, “No Time for Sergeants” is a 1956 Broadway hit by Ira Levin that follows a man as he is drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. The military will never be the same after William Stockdale completely unravels the army and ruins his sergeant’s career.

  • Ragtime — June 5 – July 27, 2013

This life-changing story of the blooming of America is the recipient of three Tony Awards and is a five-time Drama Desk Award winner. The musical, “Ragtime,” tells the story of three groups in America: upper-class Caucasians, African-Americans and Eastern European immigrants. Memories of Ellis Island, Houdini and Henry Ford are woven into a poignant patchwork of the separation of the classes.

  • Tarzan — Aug. 9 – Sept. 28, 2013

Disney’s “Tarzan,” featuring music by Phil Collins, will come to life in this recently honed telling of the story of an orphan jungle boy who is raised by a nurturing family of apes. Then, surprised by a stranger who looks like him, he uncovers a world that was once his.

  • Brigadoon — Oct. 9 – Nov. 30, 2013

A Tony Award-winner, “Brigadoon” begins when a spell is cast and the enchanted Scottish village of Brigadoon awakens for only one day every one hundred years. Tommy, a jaded American, happens upon it and will find out if love can bloom in one day.

  • A Christmas Carol — Dec. 9 – Dec. 23, 2013

In HCT’s nationally acclaimed Christmas tradition, adapted by Richard Wilkins and Barlow Bradford, Marley’s Ghost reminds the stingy Ebenezer Scrooge that “mankind should be his business.” Dickens’ carol of redemption seeks to reclaim Scrooge’s heart. Audiences travel back in time as Tiny Tim once again teaches Ebenezer Scrooge about compassion, giving and love. HCT’s critically acclaimed holiday gift adapted by Wilkins and Bradford gives full burnish to Charles Dickens’ beloved tale.

Did you already guess that I know all the words to every song in Tarzan?  You are so perceptive.  Plus, I still need to see A Christmas Carol live… How have I lived this long without doing that?

What show do you want to see?  Are you going to snag some season tickets and see them all?

iPad, uPad, iPrinting, uPrinting… Or Win an iPad!!!! (Plus Some Other Rad Stuff)

I want to thank SNAP! Conference’s awesome sponsor UPrinting for sponsoring this post as well as the EPIC giveaway below.  UPrinting is not only giving away myriad of their high quality printed items but they are throwing in a brand NEW iPad just to be extra cool.

I have a confession.  I have the decorating skills of a 19 year old frat boy that was raised by a pack of rabid wolves.  It’s true.  I would show you photographic evidence but a) I don’t really take pictures of my decor (for obvious reasons) and b) I am kind of lazy (which could offer a perfect explanation for my decorating skills).  That being said… I do appreciate pretty things, beautiful decor, and most of all my children’s smiling happy faces.

With Mother’s Day fast approaching I can’t think of a better way to incorporate all 3 of those things into an awesome gift for some lucky mother’s in my life.  Thanks to UPrinting canvas prints (available stretched and ready to hang, or rolled and ready to frame) I can do that while keeping in touch with another one of my passions… Saving money (you totally thought I was going to say unicorns… didn’t you?).  Because their prices on canvas???  It’s pretty awesome.  Maybe if I throw of few of these bad boys up on the walls my awful paint job will no longer be noticeable. (okay… I would totally get a unicorn printed on canvas)  And while I’m at it I should probably get a few custom postcards made of my cute kids… Because who wouldn’t want to get their faces in the mail?  (I am totally going to make unicorn postcards too.  I can use them to mail little notes to the family when I am out of town.  YAY!)

Giveaway Time

Like I mentioned above… You have basically hit the jackpot.  UPrinting is giving away some of their best printed items and a NEW iPad.  I am actually a LOT jealous that I can’t enter.  But my loss is your gain.  And it proves just how much I (okay UPrinting) really really REALLY loves you.

Thanks to Rafflecopter and the other 4 other partnering sites (including SNAP!)  you have about a gazillion ways to enter (I am of course only slightly {okay a lot} exaggerating).  But the best part??? Instead of having to comment a bajillion times you can just enter you Facebook info and click a few times and be entered to win.  SUPER duper easy huh?
